The Project
The proposal is to build a utility scale ‘wind farm’ on
a well defined ridgeline 10km south of Taharoa in the Waitomo District.
Twenty two turbines will be constructed, each with a maximum tip
height of 110m.
The power output of the turbines will be nominally 2.0MW, giving
a total power rating of 44MW, depending on the final turbine choice.
This is equivalent to the power demand of approximately 14,000
households.
Wind monitoring has been conducted using 25m, 40m and 55m monitoring
masts and is on-going.
Previous Project
An application was made to the Waitomo District
Council and to Environment Waikato for a 25 turbine project in
March 2005. This project was withdrawn
from the application process on 14 November 2005. Notable
differences with the modified project are:
-
Reduced number of turbines
-
Larger turbines
-
Single line of turbines extending further along the ridgeline
-
Inclusion of two more landowners
The principal reason for the modifications is to improve the project
economics.
Benefits
The following positive outcomes are envisaged from the
project:
-
Local security of electricity supply
-
Materials supply – notably
concrete and aggregate
-
Construction jobs
-
Maintenance jobs
-
Increased tourism
-
Increased rating base for Waitomo District Council
-
Clean energy for up to 14,000 houses
-
Contribution to NZ Climate Change obligations
-
Improved safety of Taumatatotara WestRoad
